    TRANSCRIPT:

    The Kingdom of An Tir proudly presents the first ethereal court of King Christian the third and Queen Helene the third, 16 August 2020

    KING CHRISTIAN III

    Hello An Tir! We come back to you again because we have announcements to make. we have words that we’d like to speak do you, some updates that we want to give you, and just speak about the current state of the Kingdom at this time.

    As you might know there has been a notification and release from the Board of Directors. This was with a petition that had gone from multiple kingdoms in support of canceling foreseeable events up until at least the end of January 2021.

    This is something that we had understood, we had read fully, we agreed with the purpose behind this. And so, we have put our names behind it as support. As one of the coastal Kingdoms, we do see ourselves hit fairly hard, at least originally, and still occurrences are coming up as far as the issues with COVID-19 and we believe that it was the best move to be able to again limit exposure, limit access to those who may be exposed, and hopefully encourage those to take care of themselves at home, to look to their families, to look to the things that are essential and necessary before looking at extracurricular activities and the fun that that we do have, we do love, and we do want to return to.

    But at this time, for safety’s sake, it would be best to postpone that and to resume when we are healthy. And we all can do so together.

    It is not done easily. It does not feel good to say no we cannot play; no we cannot have the fun that we had before. But rest assured, the more that we do, the sooner we will be able to.

    We have found amazing success with all of the interactions, all of the different events that are happening online; the flexibility, and real ingenuity that has come out of this. It may be a forced measure but it is one of those things that is wonderful to see the creativity that has come out of it and been able to push forward what we do in our society and take that online and present it to the world, nonetheless our kingdom itself.

    We commend everyone that is involved with that we love it we see it everywhere and we are just immensely impressed. We wanted to make a very specific call out to that and say thank you. Thank you for all the work that you’ve done.

    There is a ton of work being done behind the scenes whether it’s at home or in small groups together to manage this.

    It is absolutely heartwarming to be able to maintain our community and we would ask you to look to that. To do those things take part in those things and help out if you can if you have those skills to be able to contact those that have notified that they are going to put be putting on events.

    We are going to be having more events like that listed on our calendar and online to be able to identify the events that need help and need volunteers from home. We would love to see the massive amount of people that come out to help events in person now transform online. So please do, and thank you for your help.

    As you know, there are many officers within the Kingdom of An Tir. Many people put their hands to hard work for our populace and to uphold and to protect our kingdom. One of the greatest roles with the greatest responsibility is that of the Kingdom Seneschal.

    AN TIR KINGDOM SENESCHAL, ALIANORA GREYMOOR, OP

    Thank you, Your Majesties.  I do have a few pieces of administrative business that should be announced into Your court.

    My first pieces of business are an unpleasant necessity of my role as Seneschal.  I have four sanctions that need to be announced.

    On June 6, 2020, Their Majesties, King Christian III and Queen Helene III of An Tir have issued the sanction of Temporary Removal from Participation in the SCA against Deborah Parker, known in the SCA as Temperence Trewelove.  This sanction precludes attendance or participation in any manner at any SCA activity, event, practice, or official gathering for any reason, at any time.  This includes a ban on participation in officially recognized SCA social media sites, officially recognized SCA electronic email lists, and officially recognized SCA webpages.

    On June 8, 2020, Their Majesties, King Christian III and Queen Helene III of An Tir have issued the sanction of Temporary Removal from Participation in the SCA against Blaine Hebert, known in the SCA as Jean-Pierre Colbert le Touce-a-Tout.  This sanction precludes attendance or participation in any manner at any SCA activity, event, practice, or official gathering for any reason, at any time.  This includes a ban on participation in officially recognized SCA social media sites, officially recognized SCA electronic email lists, and officially recognized SCA webpages.

    On June 8, 2020, Their Majesties, King Christian III and Queen Helene III of An Tir have issued the sanction of Temporary Removal from Participation in the SCA against Heather Anne Armstrong, known in the SCA as Anna Jane Burd.  This sanction precludes attendance or participation in any manner at any SCA activity, event, practice, or official gathering for any reason, at any time.  This includes a ban on participation in officially recognized SCA social media sites, officially recognized SCA electronic email lists, and officially recognized SCA webpages.

    On July 29, 2020, Their Majesties, King Christian III and Queen Helene III of An Tir have issued the sanction of Exile from the Kingdom of An Tir against Kristen Leet, known in the SCA as Madrun Gehithess.  Exile from the Kingdom precludes engaging in any SCA activity in the Kingdom that issued the sanction. This precludes participation in any Kingdom-controlled Social or Electronic media.  This sanction expires at the end of the current Reign.

    Additionally, the Kingdom Minister of Arts and Sciences has included an administrative sanction which prohibits specific participation in A&S activities in the Kingdom of An Tir, for the period of 2 years.

    We also have some branch changes to announce.

    Their Alpine Highnesses of the Summits and their Seneschal have requested the expansion of the boundaries of their Principality.  The Kingdom of An Tir has granted the following Oregon counties to the Principality of the Summits which are now recorded by the Society:

    Sherman, Gilliam, Wheeler, Grant, Umtilla, Union, Baker, Wallowa.

    It is my sad duty to announce that, as of July 28, 2020 the branch known as the Shire of Druim Doineann is in abeyance due to lack of a Seneschal, a required office.  The abeyance will be in place for no longer than 2 years.

    That ends my business in Your Majesties court.

    KING CHRISTIAN III

    This job is very difficult and I must say that there is not nearly enough thanks to go around for those who have taken on the responsibility before and those two who look to take it on now. We have had the honor to stand by and watch the work that is done

    And it is an amazing task that takes great people to fulfill that role.

    At this time, we are prepared to announce that the new incoming Kingdom Seneschal will be mistress Attia Prima. She is an amazing candidate with great skill. She has done an immense amount of work behind the scenes and we are very happy to know that she will be there to take care and charge of the kingdom in matters that it needs. So, congratulations Attia.

    QUEEN HELENE III

    An Tir, I have some fantastic news to share with you.

    Recently, a petition has been submitted for the advancement of Glyn Dwfn from a shire to a Barony. It has been submitted to the society and it has been approved. So we are very excited to be able to create a new Barony.

    The people of Glyn Dwfn are inspiring in how hard they worked. They not only met every requirement to be advanced, they exceeded every single one. People from Glyn Dwfn are known all across the Kingdom. They have one of the highest rates of newcomers and newcomer retention.

    There will be a polling to determine the first Baronial couple to rule in Glyn Dwfn and all of these timelines will be communicated. We just wanted to share today this wonderful news.

    We are beyond excited to be able to make this change.

    Thank you everyone for attending this first Kingdom Court, virtual though it may be, it still makes us feel that much more connected to you, Our people. We miss you all very much and we are so glad to be able to reach out to you today.

    KING CHRISTIAN III

    Please know that we are always here, and we would love to hear from you. Be it with award recommendations for all the work being done still behind the scenes virtually or otherwise, or simply as a letter just to tell us how you are, what you’re doing, and how your life is.

    We want to hear from everyone. We want to know how everyone is doing. We miss everyone.

    And please know that this is a difficult time but we will return we will come back better and stronger. It’s An Tir and you know we have the strength, we have the people, and we have the will.

    An Tir, until we meet again, We love you all.

  • From the Seneschal of An Tir Regarding the Board Resolution of July 28th, 2020

    Greetings People of An Tir,

    The board of directors of the SCA has made a resolution to suspend in-person events until January 31st, 2021 in response to a request made by many of the Crowns of the Kingdoms in North America. This resolution will eliminate the need for Kingdoms to request variances to move Crown/Coronet Tournaments due to ongoing event cancellations. I want to express my gratitude to King Christian and Queen Hélène for lending their voices along with their Royal cousins in support of this petition to the board.

    What does this mean for An Tir? It means that all in-person events will be cancelled on the Kingdom’s online calendar through January 31st, 2021. This will impact the following Kingdom events: Kingdom Feast, Collegium, and 12th Night. While we may explore virtual event options, please note that these events will not be happening in-person unless we see significant changes in governmental health advisories. I want to thank the event stewards of these Kingdom and local events. You have all put a huge amount of effort into planning these events and that effort is appreciated and admired, especially in these difficult and uncertain times.

    The future date of An Tir’s next Crown Tournament is something that will remain to be determined. Please know that the Kingdom events team is committed to holding a tournament to choose Royal Heirs as soon as we can safely come together to do so. I would love to be able to offer a specific date as to when that may take place but that is not yet possible.

    In the meantime, I would encourage the populace of An Tir to continue to share your interests and passions in our online communities. Continue to build each-other up in these challenging times. Continue to choose kindness.

    In service to Crown and Kingdom I remain,

    Mistress Alianora Greymoor, OP
    Kingdom Seneschal of An Tir

  • Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity until January 31st, 2021

    During the July 28, 2020, Ad Hoc meeting of the Board of Directors for the Society for Creative Anachronism, the following Resolution was passed by a unanimous vote and made effective immediately:

      I. Whereas, the COVID-19 Global Pandemic has created an unparalleled challenge for the administration of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The Board of Directors acknowledges the health and well-being of the membership and participants of the SCA are of utmost importance;

      II. Whereas, the Crowns of the vast majority of North American Kingdoms have petitioned the board to suspend in-person SCA events in North America until January 31st, 2021;

      III. Whereas, following consultation with the Kingdom Seneschals of the North American Kingdoms, it appears that this petition is generally supported;

      IV. Therefore Now Be It Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors suspends all SCA in-person events in North America until January 31st, 2021;

      V. Resolved, Small local gatherings including, but not limited to, archery practice, guild meetings, officer meetings, and local martial activities shall remain at the discretion of the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, in accordance with CDC, State, Provincial, and local health guidelines and recommendations. Virtual events as alternatives continue to be a viable option;

      VI. Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors directs the Society Seneschal to grant a blanket variance to Corpora waiving any required events such as Crown List and Coronation until January 31st, 2021, as well as extending all current reigns until a royal list can be held to determine suitable Heirs;

      VII. Resolved, If a Crown or Coronet steps down without Heirs for a Kingdom or Principality, a Regent shall be installed until such time as a royal list may be held to find suitable Heirs and a Coronation or Investiture held. This regent should be installed according to the Kingdom or Principality laws that govern the appointment of Regents, after consultation with the Society Seneschal. If the Kingdom or Principality has no such law, the Kingdom Seneschal (and Principality Seneschal when appropriate) must consult with the Society Seneschal and Society President to determine an appropriate selection method for a Regent;

      VIII. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors invites Kingdoms who have determined that it is safe to host in-person events before January 31st, 2021, to request a variance from the Society Seneschal to be able to do so. The Society Seneschal shall have the authority to grant or deny these requests. These requests will be reviewed by the Board using the same review method used for variances to Corpora;

      IX. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors commends the officers, royalty, hard-working membership, and participants who have made it possible for the SCA to continue activities during these trying times.

  • From the Seneschal of An Tir Regarding September Crown AS LV

    Greetings People of An Tir,

    King Christian, Queen Helene, and I continue to monitor the state of the many municipalities that make up An Tir and how those municipalities are responding to the continued concerns of the Covid-19 pandemic. At this time we must make the difficult decision to continue the cancellation of events through the end of August. We are having ongoing conversations about the future of activities (martial practices, socials, meetings, etc) and a separate announcement regarding activities for August will be forthcoming.

    As the summer progresses, more information is becoming available as to the ability for certain events to take place. The reopening plan for the State of Oregon makes it clear that September Crown will not be able to proceed this year. While the Crown and I regret that we must again postpone Crown Tournament, we believe this cancellation is in the best interest of public safety and is also in compliance with governmental health regulations.

    Please know that events with the size and complexity of September Crown often have multiple contracts in place. Cancelling at this time may seem early but please keep in mind that the decision to cancel must take into consideration the limiting of our financial liability. We do not want to pay unnecessary cancellation fees; such fees often increase as events draw closer. My deep thanks to the Shire of Hauksgardr for incorporating a Coronation into an already very full weekend. Many volunteer hours have gone into the planning and preparation of this event and it is very much appreciated.

    At this time, An Tir has received a variance from the Society Seneschal to extend the reign of King Christian III and Queen Helene III to the weekend of Kingdom Feast, October 16-18th. Until we know more about what October may bring, we are working with the event staff to incorporate a Crown Tournament into Kingdom Feast. The victors of the Tournament will be Crowned at that event as stipulated by our approved society variance. I want to thank the event steward of Kingdom Feast, Lady Ciar. Her Ladyship has been extremely gracious with contingency planning for this very situation. More information about the Crown Tournament itself will come when we have a few more details defined.

    Thank you, An Tir for your continued flexibility as we navigate these uncertain times. It is my great hope to see you all again soon.

    In Service to Crown and Kingdom,
    Mistress Alianora Greymoor, OP
    Kingdom Seneschal of An Tir

My goal as the new chair is to support the populace and the members of the Council in working together to achieve that mission. • From the Crown of An Tir Regarding Social Media and Kindness

    Unto the people and populace of An Tir,

    On the heels of the global pandemic which leaves many isolated and concerned, We find ourselves facing another world-altering challenge. We hear the concerns, worries, and outrage of Our people and we stand with the tenets of Chivalry, Honor, Inclusivity, and Justice that have shaped An Tir. We will always oppose injustice and work to make Our Kingdom a better place.

    Social Media has become a megaphone for divisiveness on all sides. As stated by the SCA Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, it is a time for us all to “continue to work to make [the] SCA a haven for all.”

    With this, we have heard from many about posts and discussions on social media and We hear your calls for action. We encourage each of you to continue to report things that stand against your values and those of Our Kingdom and Organization.

    At this time, we are working with local officers and Our Kingdom Seneschal to ensure that these concerns are escalated appropriately to the Society Seneschal and the Board of Directors.

    We encourage you all to review An Tir’s Bullying and Harassment policy and grievance procedures. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your local Seneschal, your Principality Seneschal, or the Kingdom Seneschal.

    As always, We are here for the good people of An Tir, as well.

    These are very troublesome times, emotions are riding on high, and We, like many of you, are feeling the strain echoing around the globe.

    We encourage everyone to be understanding and to be kind. Through kindness, we will all persevere, and when we are able to come together again, we will do so knowing that we are One An Tir, a chosen family, working to be the best, most welcoming, and most inclusive place.

    Long Live An Tir

  • Gifting an SCA Membership

    From SCA.org

    There has been an extremely generous response from our members, wanting to gift memberships to people in need.

    If you would like to gift a membership for a specific individualplease download and follow these instructions.

  • From the SCA Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

    From SCA.org

    As so many of us struggle with the pain of separation from one another socially, so too do we struggle with the realities of systemic inequality and racism in our society. In the United States and around the world, the recent senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many before them have unleashed an avalanche of pent-up emotion.

    Our Core Values, which guide us in even these darkest of times, include the following tenets: to “act in accordance with the chivalric virtues of honor and service”, to “value and respect the worth and dignity of all individuals”, and to “practice inclusiveness and respect pluralism and diversity”.

    If we are to live by our core values then there is only one path forward: we must both fight against systemic injustice and support those that do.
    As the unique educational organization that we are, we have the opportunity to leverage our greatest resource: our community.

    It is our community that makes us who we are. That is the true value of the Society for Creative Anachronism. We treasure the rich diversity of our community as a reflection of the rich diversity of history and we owe it to ourselves to deepen our understanding of pervasive inequitable treatment so that we can move forward on a journey of healing.

    There is a tremendous amount of work to be done. It is time for us to take a hard look at who we are in order to hold ourselves accountable for the actions we take – and the actions we don’t take.

    There is also fear. Our current reality is the direct result of generations of discrimination and collective trauma. As we educate ourselves to best support every member of our community, we must acknowledge the fear – and speak regardless. The time for inaction is over.

    Every member of the SCA can effect positive change through personal accountability. Educate yourself and those around you on issues of injustice. Speak out against it when you see it, and use any platform that you have to elevate other voices speaking out against it, particularly those voices of marginalized groups. Assist those causes which seek to address discrimination, racial inequity, and all systemic injustice through the resources that you have available to you.

    I invite all members of the SCA to continue to think about further ways they can help strengthen our commitment to our Core Values.

    My SCA stands against bigotry. My SCA will not be silent, and therefore complicit, in the face of injustice. I will continue to work to make my SCA a haven for all, and a key player for progress in the battle against inequality through education and community.

    It is my most ardent hope that you will join me.
